Description
The Ho Chi Minh City Ao Dai Festival is a spectacular, month-long cultural celebration held annually throughout March. It is dedicated to honoring, preserving, and shining a global spotlight on the áo dài, Vietnam’s iconic and elegant traditional dress.
Rooted in the desire to celebrate Vietnamese heritage, the 2026 edition (marking its 12th year) operates under the inspiring theme "Golden Threads – Weaving Aspirations." This theme serves as a beautiful nod to the country's legendary silk and brocade craftsmanship, weaving the traditional garments into the modern fabric of a dynamic mega-city.
Why it is organized: The festival is collaboratively hosted by the municipal Department of Tourism and the Vietnam Women's Union to commemorate major historical milestones. These include International Women's Day, the legendary Hai Ba Trung Uprising, and the 50th anniversary of the city's official renaming from Saigon-Gia Dinh.
Cultural Significance: Far beyond a simple fashion week, the festival transforms the entire city into a vibrant stage. Every áo dài worn on the streets or at historic landmarks acts as a "living cultural ambassador". It proves how the traditional costume continuously evolves to fit modern life while remaining a cherished symbol of national pride, helping to position Ho Chi Minh City as a culturally rich, creative, and internationally integrated destination.
Activities you can participate in at the festival:
The Grand Ao Dai Parade & Mass Folk Dance: The absolute centerpiece of the festival takes place on the morning of March 8th. Visitors can witness and join a breathtaking mass folk dance and street parade. It draws tens of thousands of participants citywide, transforming spaces like the Nguyen Hue walking street into a vibrant sea of flowing, colorful silk.
Fashion Showcases & Cultural Performances: Throughout the month, the city hosts elaborate showcases featuring nearly 400 unique áo dài collections from top designers nationwide. These events bring together hundreds of models, performers, and cultural ambassadors to celebrate the garment's aesthetic evolution.
Interactive Exhibitions on Nguyen Hue Street: Locals and tourists can dive into dedicated áo dài-themed experiential zones. These spaces feature captivating art installations that beautifully connect the traditional dress with the city's bustling food scene, historic hotspots, and classic handicrafts.
The "Ao Dai and Metro" Experience: Blending heritage with modern urban life, this unique activity encourages festival-goers to wear their traditional attire while hopping on the city's new metro line. By connecting key stops like the Ben Thanh and Opera House stations, travelers can easily explore a curated route of must-see cultural and tourism sites across Ho Chi Minh City.
